Abstract

This study aims to identify the misconception profile of ninth-grade junior high school students on biotechnology material using the Certainty of Response Index (CRI) method. Biotechnology contains abstract and applicable concepts that are prone to misunderstanding. This quantitative descriptive study involved 32 ninth-grade students as research subjects. The instrument used was a reasoned multiple-choice diagnostic test equipped with a confidence scale (CRI) of 1 to 5. Data analysis was carried out by grouping students' answers into categories of understanding the concept, understanding the concept but not confident, misconceptions, and not understanding the concept. The results showed that students' misconceptions were spread across various sub-concepts with varying percentage levels. The most significant finding showed the highest level of misconceptions in the indicators of determining the basic principles of modern biotechnology and identifying biotechnology products, with the percentage of misconceptions reaching 78.125% in item number 10 and 75% in item number 4. The low level of students' understanding of the distinction between fermented and non-fermented products and the principles of genetic engineering indicates the need for a deeper emphasis on learning to differentiate conventional and modern concepts
