Best Practice of Fun Learning Activities in English Language Subjects through the Project Based Learning Model at SMP Nurul Hikmah II Bekasi, West Java
Abstract
This best practice study aims to describe the effectiveness of implementing the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in creating enjoyable learning activities and improving students' vocabulary mastery, engagement, and self-confidence. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach supported by quantitative data. The subjects were 35 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through observations, questionnaires, authentic project assessments, vocabulary tests, student reflections, and interviews. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, interpretation of findings, and calculation of percentage improvement in learning outcomes. The results showed significant improvements after implementing PjBL over four meetings. Student engagement increased from 30% to 85%, vocabulary mastery expanded from limited to 40–60 new words, and the class average grade rose from 72 to 87. Confidence in speaking also significantly increased, as evidenced by students' increased confidence in speaking in class, which increased from 35% to 82%. Attitudes toward the lesson also shifted from less enthusiastic to very positive, based on the questionnaire results. Furthermore, students demonstrated greater creativity and collaboration in completing the descriptive video project.
